In an effort to help relieve the crisis, Rep. Dennis Kucinich and state, county and local leaders announced a $14 billion plan to buy vacant homes.Kucinich, who had a key role in the plan, said it's one of the most important issues facing us.

"We're fighting to save our cities. We're fighting to save our neighborhoods. And this is a fight we can't lose," Kucinich said. The plan still needs to get through the Senate, and President George W. Bush is threatening a veto.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich won a passage of an amendment that will target the federal response to the foreclosure crisis on the neighborhoods that have been hit hardest by increases in vacant and abandoned houses.

The amendment was offered to H.R. 5818, the Neighborhood Stabilization Act. It is a bill to establish a $15 billion aid package to states, cities and urban counties to deal with the rise of vacancies.

The Congressman's amendment was unanimously accepted by voice vote.

Kucinich's amendment improves the formula that states will use to allocate new federal funds, ensuring that neighborhoods with the highest rate of vacancies receive the most support.
