ENCINITAS – Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich outlined his vision of “strength through peace” yesterday as he excoriated the Bush administration's approach to foreign policy.

Speaking at a fundraising brunch, the Ohio congressman contended that the traditional doctrine of “peace through strength” has been discredited by the Bush administration's conduct of the war against terrorism and the invasion of Iraq.

“ 'Peace through strength' has meant pre-emptive war, 'shock and awe,' unilateralism, first strike, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, military commissions, the Patriot Act and a series of presidential orders that were undemocratic,” Kucinich said. “ 'Peace through strength' has proven to be a dead end – a manifest, abject failure.”

In contrast, he said, “The Kucinich doctrine of strength through peace means a president who will engage directly with the leaders of the world, who will go and meet with the leaders in Iran and Syria and will go to Israel and Palestine and work on peace in the Middle East.”

National public opinion polls show Kucinich running in low single digits, near the bottom of the eight-candidate 2008 Democratic field. His vociferous opposition to the war in Iraq, along with his expansive promises of health care, education and jobs for all Americans, have earned him a small but enthusiastic base of supporters.

Yesterday, he addressed about 300 supporters at the Chopra Living Center in Encinitas and then spoke to a fundraiser for the Democratic Club of Carlsbad-Oceanside at the Carlsbad Women's Club.

In Encinitas, Kucinich said as president he would curtail the United States' military presence around the globe and seek an end to nuclear weapons.

“I do not believe it's any longer appropriate for America to have 100 bases around the world,” he said.

“We need to take care of things here at home and work with the world community to establish security.

“ 'Strength through peace' in the Kucinich administration means that we will restore the full meaning of the nonproliferation treaty, and we will work to abolish nuclear weapons.”
